Ethiopian Airlines Converts Six Boeing 787-9 Options into Firm Orders to Support Global Network Expansion

Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed the conversion of six purchase options for Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft into firm orders, strengthening the carrier’s long-haul expansion strategy and ongoing fleet modernisation programme.

The announcement, made jointly with Boeing on 21 April 2026, represents a significant step in the airline’s long-term growth plan and builds on its major wide-body aircraft commitments in recent years.

The additional aircraft are expected to support the expansion of Ethiopian Airlines’ intercontinental network from its hub in Addis Ababa while also enhancing belly-hold cargo capacity to accommodate rising global demand for air freight.

Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew described the order conversion as an important milestone for the airline’s development strategy.

“Converting the options for six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft into firm orders is a proud moment for us,” he said. “This investment reflects our commitment to sustainable growth, operational efficiency and delivering a high-quality travel experience to our passengers.”

Ethiopian Airlines operates the largest fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners in Africa, utilising both the 787-8 and 787-9 variants on high-demand long-haul routes connecting Addis Ababa to destinations across Europe, Asia, North America and within Africa.

Boeing officials noted that the continued partnership underscores the strategic role of the 787 platform in supporting the airline’s network expansion and route development.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is widely recognised for its fuel efficiency, extended range and operational flexibility, enabling airlines to operate long-haul services more efficiently while providing additional cargo capacity in the aircraft’s lower hold for key international trade routes.

Ethiopian Airlines Group remains one of the fastest-growing carriers globally, serving an extensive international network spanning more than 140 destinations with a modern fleet of wide-body and narrow-body aircraft.

As a member of the Star Alliance network, the airline continues to play a central role in connecting Africa to major global markets.
