Maersk Diverts Cape Town-Bound Vessel to Ngqura Amid Schedule Delays
Maersk is diverting a scheduled Cape Town port call to Ngqura as the shipping line works to recover accumulated delays affecting its MW1 India-Africa service.
The Maersk Cubango 630E will omit Cape Town and instead call at the Port of Ngqura in the Eastern Cape as part of a contingency measure aimed at restoring the vessel’s schedule.
Maersk said the delays had accumulated along the Africa rotation, including in West Africa.
The diversion will affect both import and export cargo originally scheduled to move through Cape Town.
Maersk said export bookings scheduled for the Maersk Cubango will be transferred to the next MW1 vessel, Maersk Florence 632E.
For imports, containers originally scheduled for discharge in Cape Town will instead be discharged at Ngqura, after which they will be rerouted by road or other onward transport to their final destinations.
The carrier said the temporary adjustment is intended to mitigate the impact of accumulated delays, improve schedule reliability and protect the vessel’s planned arrival back in India.
Ngqura Gains Strategic Importance
The latest diversion highlights the growing role of Ngqura as an alternative gateway when operational disruptions affect South Africa’s major container ports.
Maersk and other carriers have previously used Ngqura to manage disruptions affecting Cape Town and other South African ports.
In January 2026, Maersk also diverted a vessel from Cape Town to Ngqura amid significant delays and adverse weather conditions.
For cargo owners and freight forwarders, such diversions can help shipping lines maintain vessel schedules, although they can also require additional inland transportation and cargo-handling arrangements.
Maersk’s latest move is therefore a schedule-recovery measure rather than an indication of a permanent change to the MW1 service rotation.
The development underscores the importance of operational flexibility across South Africa’s port network as shipping lines continue to manage delays and protect schedule reliability.
