Zimbabwe Secures US$66.8 Million Funding for Chirundu Border Upgrade with Zambia
Zimbabwe has secured financing for the US$66.8 million modernisation of the Chirundu Border Post, paving the way for major construction works to begin in October 2026.
The project, being implemented under a public-private partnership, is expected to modernise the border facility and improve the movement of freight and passengers between Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The Chirundu crossing is a key gateway on the North-South Corridor, linking Zimbabwe with Zambia, the DRC Copperbelt and major markets across Southern and Central Africa.
Its modernisation is expected to help reduce congestion and transit delays while improving the efficiency of regional trade.
Chirundu Border Consortium is financing, developing and operating the upgraded facility under the PPP arrangement.
Equipment and contractors are already being mobilised at the site, with construction expected to take approximately 18 months.
The project will be implemented in phases, beginning with the main border facilities before additional infrastructure, including accommodation and related amenities, is developed.
The upgrade is expected to strengthen Zimbabwe’s position as a regional logistics and transit hub while improving the movement of minerals, mining equipment and other commodities along the North-South Corridor.
The project follows the modernisation of Zimbabwe’s Beitbridge Border Post and forms part of the government’s broader programme to upgrade key border facilities through public-private partnerships.
