Dar es Salaam Port Reduces Vehicle Cargo Handling Times by Over 90%

DP World-Led Improvements Cut Vehicle Discharge Times at Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Port

The Port of Dar es Salaam has reduced vehicle cargo discharge times by more than 90% following operational improvements at its main multipurpose terminal, according to operator DP World.

Since DP World began operating Terminal 1 under a 30-year concession agreement in April 2024, discharge times for vehicle cargo have dropped from more than 300 hours to under 28 hours.

The terminal remains owned by the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), while DP World is responsible for its operations, development and modernisation.

The introduction of dedicated Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) operations, in partnership with TPA, has improved efficiency by allowing specialised vehicle carriers to load and discharge cargo more effectively.

The improvements were highlighted during the recent arrival of the M/V Ramhan, the longest vessel ever handled at the port.

Measuring 240 metres in length, the vessel has capacity for up to 7,790 vehicles and discharged 779 car-equivalent units, mainly heavy-duty vehicles, within 27 hours.

DP World said the faster turnaround times demonstrate the impact of improved processes, infrastructure investment, technology upgrades and workforce training implemented under the concession.

The company added that continued investment at Terminal 1 aims to strengthen Dar es Salaam’s position as a key regional logistics hub serving Tanzania and neighbouring markets.
