Cape Town Port Fuel Supplies Remain Stable Despite Middle East Tensions

Port of Cape Town Bunkering Unaffected as Fuel Supplies Stay Stable Amid Middle East Crisis

Bunkering operations at the Port of Cape Town have continued without interruption despite recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, with diesel and fuel oil supplies remaining stable, according to the Port Liaison Forum (PLF).

PLF Chairperson Terry Gale, whose organisation operates under the Cape Chamber of Commerce, said vessels calling at the port have continued to bunker normally despite concerns that regional instability could disrupt global fuel supplies.

“There have been no significant disruptions to fuel supply within the Port of Cape Town,” Gale said. “Vessels continue to bunker as normal, and fuel availability remains stable.”

He noted that bunker fuel market conditions have improved in recent weeks following the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

Although the initial escalation in tensions prompted some suppliers to increase fuel purchases in anticipation of possible price spikes, supply levels remained consistent.

“The market reacted cautiously when tensions rose, but the expected supply disruptions did not materialise,” Gale said.

According to Gale, the continued availability of bunker fuel highlights the resilience of South Africa’s fuel supply chain and reinforces Cape Town’s role as a reliable bunkering hub for vessels operating on major international trade routes.

“Bunkering is a critical service for ports, and shipping lines depend on certainty of fuel availability,” he said. “The fact that supplies have remained stable despite global uncertainty is encouraging for the maritime sector and for vessels calling at the Port of Cape Town.”
