South Africa, through its Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), has expressed condolences to the government and people of Iran following a deadly explosion at the Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, southern Iran.
The incident, initially reported to have claimed over 40 lives and injured more than 1,000 people, is now believed to have caused at least 70 deaths, according to an Iranian official quoted by state media on Monday.
CNN reported that the explosion was likely triggered by chemicals igniting in a section of shipping containers, resulting in a much larger blast.
In an official statement, DIRCO said:
“South Africa extends its heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and wishes a speedy recovery to all those injured, including individuals from various countries.”
The department also praised the emergency response teams and volunteers who are working around the clock to assist victims and manage the aftermath.
South Africa further acknowledged the swift support provided by governments who have stepped in to help.
“We stand in solidarity with the government and people of Iran in the aftermath of this tragic accident,” the statement concluded.
