Tanzania Plans Major Expansion of Tanga Port with Three New Berths to Boost Trade and Capacity

The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has announced plans to significantly expand Tanga Port through the construction of three new berths with a combined length of 900 metres.

The project will begin with an initial 300-metre berth and is expected to enhance the port’s capacity, reduce congestion and strengthen its role as a key trade gateway for Tanzania and the wider region.

The expansion plan was revealed by Tanga Port Manager Salehe Mbega during a briefing to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Infrastructure during a recent inspection visit.

The project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise port infrastructure, improve efficiency and position Tanga as a competitive entry point for regional and international trade.

According to Mbega, the additional berths will improve vessel turnaround times and allow the port to handle larger cargo volumes more efficiently, ultimately increasing trade flows and revenue generation.

Members of the parliamentary committee welcomed the development, noting visible improvements in operational efficiency at the port.

Acting Committee Chairperson Joyce Ndalichako said cargo handling was running smoothly during their inspection on March 13, 2026, highlighting reduced delays and improved service delivery following recent upgrades.

The government considers the expansion of Tanga Port a strategic priority for strengthening Tanzania’s role in the Northern Corridor and improving access to the East African hinterland.

Enhanced port capacity is expected to lower logistics costs and support growth in manufacturing, agriculture and mineral exports.

Deputy Minister for Transport David Kihenzile praised the committee’s oversight role and confirmed that the ministry would implement recommendations raised during the visit, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving port efficiency.

Representing the Tanzania Ports Authority Director General, Director of Planning, Quality and Risk Management Boniphace Nobeji said the modernization programme is supported by strong government backing aimed at transforming Tanzania into a regional maritime hub.

Once completed, the new berths are expected to further increase Tanga Port’s operational capacity, attract more shipping lines and reinforce its position as a strategic gateway supporting long-term economic growth.
