U.S. Commits $6 Billion to Boost Southern Africa’s Lobito Corridor

The United States has announced the mobilization of nearly $6 billion to support the development of the Lobito Corridor—a key transport infrastructure project linking Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Zambia.

The announcement was made on Saturday, May 10, 2025, by the U.S. State Department via its official account on the social platform X (formerly Twitter).

The funding is designated for the development and construction of the Lobito Corridor, which aims to connect southern DRC and northwestern Zambia to the Atlantic port of Lobito in Angola.

The corridor is expected to enhance regional integration and provide landlocked countries with improved access to global markets, particularly for the export of their abundant mineral resources.

U.S. officials emphasized that the funds will be dedicated specifically to corridor infrastructure, adding that Washington remains in close coordination with regional governments and international partners to ensure the project’s successful execution.

Once completed, the Lobito Corridor is projected to play a transformative role in facilitating trade, boosting exports, and improving the mobility of goods and people across the region.

This initiative is part of a broader U.S. strategy to strengthen transport networks and stimulate economic growth in Southern Africa, a region where infrastructure investment is seen as vital to long-term development and poverty reduction.
