Zambia’s President, Hakainde Hichilema, has committed to upgrading Mansa, Kasama, and Nakonde airports to international standards as part of a broader strategy to accelerate economic development in the Northern Corridor.
Speaking at the Kwabuka Traditional Ceremony in Mansa on Sunday, the President emphasized his administration’s ambition to transform Luapula Province into a dynamic economic hub.
“We will transform Mansa, Kasama, and Nakonde into international airports to foster significant economic growth,” President Hichilema stated, highlighting that this would mark a milestone in Zambia’s development.
The initiative will establish Mansa Airport as an international facility for the first time, enhancing regional connectivity and trade opportunities.
The President pledged to revitalize key infrastructure in the Northern Corridor, which includes Mansa, Kasama, Mbala, and Nakonde, ensuring the region becomes a catalyst for economic activity.
He urged unity among Zambians to support the government’s efforts in addressing systemic issues inherited upon his administration’s entry into office.
President Hichilema assured the nation that progress under the United Party for National Development (UPND) leadership would be evident within a year.
Traditional leaders and local communities welcomed the President’s announcements, commending the initiatives while raising additional priorities.
Chief Nsamba, Vice Chairperson of the Luapula Council of Chiefs, called for the revival of Mansa Batteries and urgent improvements to the province’s deteriorating road networks.
“We appreciate the government’s efforts, but we urge action on Mansa Batteries and critical road upgrades.
Furthermore, Northern and Luapula provinces’ water resources, such as the Chambeshi River, should be utilized for hydropower generation,” Chief Nsamba said.
He praised the government’s increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocation and free education initiatives, which have positively impacted citizens.
However, he emphasized that infrastructure development, including roads, bridges, and airports, remains crucial for driving sustainable economic growth and market accessibility.
The President’s vision reflects his administration’s broader goal to decentralize economic development, empowering regions to make substantial contributions to Zambia’s national economy.
The planned airport upgrades are expected to significantly enhance trade, tourism, and investment opportunities in Northern Zambia.
As the government collaborates with traditional leaders to tackle regional challenges, President Hichilema’s focus on infrastructure, energy resources, and economic hubs aims to build a sustainable future for Northern Zambia and the country as a whole.
