Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have reached an agreement to clear at least 500 trucks daily at the Kasumbalesa border, aiming to alleviate severe congestion on the Copperbelt. The decision follows reports of over 3,000 trucks stranded on the Zambian side of the border.
Katanga Governor Jacques Katwe announced that customs officers’ working hours at Kasumbalesa, Mokambo, and Sakanya border posts will be extended from 6 hours to 20 hours as part of measures to address the situation.
During a meeting in Chililabombwe, Governor Katwe commended the strong collaboration between Zambia and the DRC. Commerce Minister Chipoka Mulenga echoed this sentiment, highlighting the productive discussions held to reduce congestion.
He also thanked the Congolese government for its proactive approach to improving border operations.
Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo expressed satisfaction with the agreement, noting that the improved processes will enable truck drivers to cross into the DRC without significant delays.
This collaborative effort demonstrates a commitment to strengthening trade and logistical efficiency between the two neighboring countries.
