TAAG Angola Airlines Receives First Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, Advancing Fleet Modernization

TAAG Angola Airlines has welcomed its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, marking a key milestone in its ongoing fleet renewal strategy.

Leased from AerCap, this aircraft is the first of four Dreamliners ordered by TAAG, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to expanding its long-haul operations and enhancing passenger experience.

The new Dreamliner arrived in Luanda just ahead of Angola’s Liberation Day on February 4, featuring TAAG’s updated livery and symbolizing nearly 50 years of partnership with Boeing.

Designed for fuel efficiency, the widebody jet will replace aging aircraft, boost operational efficiency, and strengthen the airline’s global connectivity.

“This delivery is a pivotal step in modernizing our fleet,” said Nelson Pedro Rodrigues de Oliveira, CEO of TAAG Angola Airlines.

“The 787-9 Dreamliner offers efficiency and versatility, allowing us to meet market demand, improve customer experience, and expand our international network.”

TAAG currently operates a fleet of Boeing 777-300ERs, 777-200ERs, and Next-Generation 737s, serving 12 destinations across Africa, Europe, South America, and China.

With the addition of the Dreamliner, the airline aims to enhance its European routes and explore new markets in Asia and North America.

“The 787 Dreamliner will seamlessly integrate with TAAG’s existing Boeing fleet,” said Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales for Africa. “We value our long-standing partnership with TAAG and look forward to continued collaboration.”

In alignment with global sustainability initiatives, TAAG is partnering with Boeing to support CO₂ emissions reductions through the book-and-claim system, facilitating the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at airports worldwide.

Boeing forecasts that Africa will require 1,170 new airplanes over the next two decades, with its aircraft currently making up nearly 70% of the continent’s commercial fleet. TAAG’s investment in the 787 Dreamliner underscores its vision for sustainable growth and improved efficiency in the aviation sector.
