The Nyerere Bridge in Tanzania has generated Sh102.18 billion since its opening in 2016, according to the Deputy Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth Employment, and People with Disabilities), Mr. Patrobas Katambi. However, the investment funds for the bridge are not yet fully recovered.
Mr. Katambi made this announcement while addressing parliamentary inquiries reported by The Citizen. The bridge, a project of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), has been a significant financial undertaking.
In response to a question from Kigamoni’s MP, Mr. Katambi explained that as of July 2024, after nine years of operation, the bridge has accumulated Sh102.18 billion from toll revenues.
According to the project’s feasibility study, it is projected to repay the NSSF Sh344 billion over a 30-year period. This amount includes investment costs, security, and the value of the invested capital.
“Once the investment funds are fully repaid, the project will be handed over to the government,” Mr. Katambi stated.
He added that after the NSSF completes its financial recovery from the project, the government will explore options to benefit citizens without further toll payments.
In response to an MP’s query about evaluating NSSF investment initiatives, Mr. Katambi noted that actuarial assessments are conducted every three years. These assessments help identify and address potential issues with investment projects.
