Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) is set to inaugurate its first cargo operations starting March 25th, utilizing a newly acquired Boeing 737-300F aircraft, as announced by the company’s general director to Lusa.
With an investment of US$3 million (€2.74 million) in this venture, LAM aims to bolster its logistics capabilities.
Primarily catering to domestic cargo needs and serving routes to South Africa and Tanzania, the introduction of the Boeing 737-300F marks a significant milestone for LAM’s cargo transport services. Theunis Crous, the general director, elaborated on the regional scope of the operation during the public unveiling of LAM Cargo at Maputo airport.
“This marks the beginning of a new chapter in LAM’s cargo services,” stated Crous, underscoring the strategic importance of the initiative.
The newly acquired aircraft, leased for this purpose, boasts a cargo capacity of 17 tons per flight, enhancing LAM’s fleet diversity.
Crous, who also serves as the general director of South African Fly Modern Ark (FMA), was appointed by the Mozambican government to oversee LAM’s recovery efforts.
This move comes as part of a broader restructuring initiative aimed at revitalizing the airline’s operations.
Currently, LAM operates passenger flights to Mozambique’s provincial capitals, Vilanculos, and Nacala. Internationally, it serves destinations such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Dar-Es-Salaam, Harare, and Lusaka, with plans to expand to Lilongwe and Nairobi.
Additionally, LAM operates flights to Lisbon, its sole intercontinental destination, three times a week since December last year.
