Mbuji-Mayi Airport is set to accommodate large aircraft following the completion of ongoing modernization work.
This announcement was made on Monday, February 25, 2025, after a working session between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Communication Channels, and Disenclavement, Jean-Pierre Bemba, and a delegation from the Chinese firm CHINA JIANGXI Corporation, responsible for the airport’s renovation and modernization.
Michael Cheng, the representative of CHINA JIANGXI Corporation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, confirmed that all stages of the project have been adhered to and that deadlines are being met.
“The company places great importance on this project, which is why the company’s number two executive is here to assess the situation and update the Vice Prime Minister. We are working diligently to complete the work by September 2025,” Cheng said.
He also noted that while the project has experienced slight delays due to challenges in equipment delivery, caused by the poor condition of the road between Kamuesha and Mbuji-Mayi, the airport’s upgraded runway will soon be capable of handling larger aircraft once the work is completed.
