Malawi has marked a significant milestone with the arrival of a fuel train in the southern region, transporting 1.2 million liters of fuel.
This achievement was made possible by the extensive rehabilitation of the country’s railway line, which had fallen into disrepair over several decades.
President Lazarus Chakwera, who personally oversaw the train’s arrival, hailed the event as a “great milestone” for Malawi, highlighting its potential to boost the country’s socio-economic development. y
He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to modernizing critical infrastructure to improve living standards for Malawians.
Renowned economist Milward Tobias praised the shift to rail transport as a “step in the right direction” for Malawi’s economy.
The switch is expected to result in significant cost savings on fuel transportation, providing long-term benefits to the nation’s economy.
Since 1993, previous administrations had relied on road transport for fuel imports from Mozambique and Tanzania, neglecting the railway system.
The return to rail marks a pivotal moment in Malawi’s transportation and economic development trajectory.
