Mozambique’s publicly owned Ports and Rail Company (CFM) has temporarily suspended the circulation of long-distance freight and passenger trains on the Ressano Garcia and Goba railway lines, which connect Mozambique to South Africa and Eswatini, due to ongoing maintenance work.
Emídio Bata, the CFM executive director for the southern region, announced that a total of 14 freight trains will be halted on these railway lines for the next two weeks.
“Passenger trains on these lines will operate on shortened routes, with the Ressano line terminating at Matola-Gare station and the Goba line reaching only the town of Boane,” he stated.
The maintenance activities already underway involve various tasks, including the replacement of rails to enhance train safety.
To mitigate any adverse impact on the country’s economy resulting from the temporary suspension of long-distance trains, CFM has devised a coordinated plan with the relevant authorities in South Africa and Eswatini.
Bata confirmed that full operation of the trains will resume on June 14, following the completion of the maintenance work.
