French civil engineering firm Eiffage has been awarded a contract to renovate and expand the container terminal at the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) Port of Matadi.
The contract, valued at over €100 million, was secured through Eiffage’s subsidiary, Eiffage Génie Civil Marine.
Located 150km upstream from the mouth of the Congo River, the Port of Matadi is the DRC’s primary port, handling 90% of the country’s container imports, exports, and general cargo
. The project, awarded by Matadi Corridor Terminaux à Conteneurs, involves significant upgrades to improve capacity and efficiency.
The scope of work includes constructing a new 350-meter-long, 30-meter-wide pile dock in front of existing Docks 5, 6, and 7, along with three 20-meter-wide access bridges.
Additional infrastructure developments include an operations building, a workshop facility, and the refurbishment of the seven-hectare logistics hub.
Eiffage confirmed that construction will be carried out while the dock remains operational, ensuring minimal disruption to port activities. The project is expected to be completed within 27 months.
The terminal is managed and operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) through its subsidiary, ICTSI Cooperatif U.A.
