Crane Collapse Temporarily Halts Operations at Yantian Port

Operations at the Port of Yantian were temporarily suspended following the partial collapse of a ship-to-shore (STS) crane onto a feeder container ship operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

The incident occurred around 08:40 local time in Shenzhen, involving the MSC Riona, a 1998-built feeder vessel with a capacity of 1,730 TEU, which was on an intra-Asia route when the collision happened.

Local reports indicate that the crane was severely damaged, and several containers from the ship fell overboard into the sea. Port authorities and MSC are currently assessing the extent of the damage.

Salvage operations are expected to begin soon to recover the containers and clear the debris from the collapsed crane.

As one of the busiest ports in southern China, Yantian’s operations are crucial to global trade. The temporary closure of berth two, where the incident occurred, is causing significant disruptions.

Authorities are working swiftly to conduct safety checks and repairs to resume operations as soon as possible.

In the meantime, adjustments and rerouting are being implemented to minimize delays.

While the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, initial reports suggest adverse weather conditions or mechanical failure may have contributed. Further details are pending.
