Cathay Cargo extends congratulations to Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for maintaining its status as the world’s busiest cargo airport in 2023, as reported by Airports Council International (ACI).
As Hong Kong’s primary carrier for 77 years and the largest cargo operator at HKIA, Cathay Cargo takes pride in contributing to this achievement.
Tom Owen, Director of Cargo at Cathay, remarked, “Hong Kong’s continued recognition as the top air cargo hub globally reflects the resilience, innovation, and collaborative efforts of the Hong Kong air cargo community.
With its cutting-edge infrastructure, expertise, and capabilities, coupled with the expansion of intermodal connectivity in the Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong remains a leader in the global air cargo industry.”
He added, “Cathay’s ongoing investments in our fleets, cargo network, facilities, digitalization, and sustainability initiatives underscore our confidence in the long-term prospects of Hong Kong as an air cargo logistics hub.
We are committed to collaborating with various stakeholders to further develop Hong Kong as the premier air cargo gateway connecting the Chinese Mainland with the world.”
In a recent milestone, HKIA and Cathay Cargo jointly hosted the IATA World Cargo Symposium, attracting record attendance for an IATA event.
Cathay Cargo seized the opportunity as the host airline to showcase Hong Kong’s top-tier air cargo logistics hub.
Cathay Cargo operates a fleet of 20 Boeing 747 freighter aircraft and utilizes the cargo holds of over 190 passenger aircraft within the Cathay Group.
The announcement of acquiring six new Airbus A350F freighters in December 2023, with potential for 20 more in the future, demonstrates Cathay’s commitment to growth.
In 2023, Cathay Cargo transported nearly 1.4 million tonnes of cargo, marking a 20% increase from the previous year.
