Addressing stakeholders at Ndola’s Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, President Hichilema pledged to address all concerns raised during the meeting, acknowledging the pressing issue of road safety amidst the push for a 24-hour economy.
Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali acknowledged government delays in addressing challenges such as the regulation of online taxi operators and illegal bus stops.
He noted that measures, including the regulation of online taxi operators through a gazette notice, have been implemented.
Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo affirmed President Hichilema’s commitment to support the transport sector, while Local Government and Rural Development Minister Gary Nkombo directed councils to identify spaces for truck parks to ease transporters’ challenges.
Housing and Infrastructure Minister Charles Milupi assured transporters of improved road infrastructure standards under the UPND government, aiming to facilitate smoother operations.
During the meeting, representatives from various transport associations voiced concerns. Benson Tembo of the Petroleum Transporters Association highlighted unfair treatment of Zambian transporters compared to foreign counterparts in transporting petroleum products.
Amis Daudi, National Spokesperson for Public Passenger Transport Operators, called for a streamlined regulatory framework to reduce business costs.
Luckford Nkana of the Coach Drivers Union emphasized the need for compulsory defensive driving training, while John Changwe of the Zambia Union of Tanker Drivers welcomed the establishment of a Drivers’ Desk at State House as a timely initiative.
