The Panama Canal Authority (PCA) has announced an increase in daily transit slots in response to the current and projected water levels of Gatun Lake.
In an Advisory to Shipping issued on Monday, PCA revealed the adjustment to accommodate the rising demand for transits.
The PCA will be offering two additional slots through auction for transit dates starting March 18, with an extra slot becoming available for transit dates beginning March 25.
During the period from March 18 to 25, the PCA will be able to accommodate a total of seven Neopanamax and 20 Panamax vessels, compared to the current period ending on March 17, which accommodates a total of 24 vessels. These measures aim to enhance the chances for vessels seeking transit reservations.
The PCA emphasized that it is closely monitoring the water situation and that the measures announced will remain in effect until conditions warrant changes, which will be communicated promptly.
