Dr. António Agostinho Neto Airport Sees Sixfold Surge in Cargo Operations

Cargo operations at Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport have experienced significant growth, with a total volume of 225,900 kilograms (225.9 tons) recorded from January to August this year, according to António Pombal, the general director of the airport’s Temporary Operator.

Pombal highlighted that the cargo segment has grown sixfold since operations began on December 19, 2023.

The airport’s cargo terminal has an annual capacity of 130,000 tons and handles exclusive cargo flights, while passenger transport continues at 4 de Fevereiro Airport.

The oil sector plays a crucial role in this growth, with cargo destined for neighboring countries. Airlines such as TAAG and Ethiopian Airlines operate at the airport, with major clients including DHL and PANALPINA.

Pombal emphasized that the new airport has attracted direct heavy cargo, particularly for the oil sector. Exported goods include food products and live animals like pigs and chicks.

While import activity remains limited, general cargo transport to countries like Congo-Brazzaville and South Africa is underway.

The Angolan Government aims to position the airport as a key player in the regional logistics landscape, potentially transforming it into a Cargo Logistics Distribution Center.

The airport aspires to rival major hubs in Ethiopia and South Africa, solidifying Angola’s standing in the Civil Aviation sector.

To further enhance cargo services and expand passenger operations, the Ministry of Transport is actively working on certification processes, with a particular focus on the export market to Europe.
