Zambia Advances Vision for Regional Aviation Hub with Mansa Airport Upgrade

Zambia’s government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the country into a regional aviation hub, as work on upgrading Mansa Airport progresses under a strategic partnership with China Jiangsu International.

This development was highlighted by Minister of Transport and Logistics, Frank Tayali, during a high-level meeting in Lusaka with Som Qinbo, Chairman of China Jiangsu International.

Welcoming the Chinese delegation, Minister Tayali expressed deep appreciation for the longstanding and productive relationship between Zambia and China.

He emphasized the enduring ties between the two nations, dating back to Zambia’s independence in 1964, citing joint achievements like the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA) as symbols of strong historical cooperation established by founding leaders Chairman Mao Zedong and Dr. Kenneth Kaunda.

Tayali stressed that infrastructure development is essential for Africa’s economic growth and regional integration. “Africa’s growth hinges on resilient, modern infrastructure,” he said.

“As Zambia is strategically located at the heart of the continent, we are determined to become a key aviation hub through investments like the Mansa Airport upgrade.” The government aims to leverage Zambia’s central position to expand air connectivity domestically and across Africa.

The Mansa Airport project, valued at K740 million, is being implemented under the Design and Build model and is expected to be completed within 17 months.

Tayali noted that the project has reached 7% completion, with key milestones such as mobilisation and design review already achieved.

He praised China Jiangsu International’s commitment to maintaining progress despite delays in the release of funds.

“Your dedication despite funding challenges reflects true partnership,” Tayali said, adding that the Ministry of Transport and Logistics is actively engaging the Ministry of Finance to expedite the release of funds to meet contractual obligations.

One key hurdle facing the project is the delay in securing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval.

Tayali assured stakeholders that the Ministry is working closely with the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) to secure approvals by April 30, 2025, and emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding environmental standards.

The Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s focus on transparency, efficiency, and responsible use of public resources.

He pledged that the Ministry would closely monitor the project to ensure it is completed on time and within budget.

“We are committed to enhancing air connectivity across provincial centers and improving Zambia’s aviation infrastructure to drive economic growth and regional integration,” he said.

The Mansa Airport upgrade marks a crucial step in Zambia’s broader plan to strengthen transportation networks, support trade, and unlock economic opportunities across Southern and Central Africa.
