The United States and Nigeria are revitalizing their aviation partnership, reinforcing their bilateral relationship. The U.S.
Mission in Nigeria’s Public Diplomacy Department announced the renewal of an aviation agreement to bolster industry ties between the two nations.
According to a statement published in the Punch Newspaper, the agreement, initially in effect since 2000, has been updated to establish a modern civil aviation partnership.
“The U.S.-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement, provisionally applied since 2000, officially came into force on May 13, 2024.
This bilateral agreement establishes a modern civil aviation relationship with Nigeria, consistent with U.S. Open Skies international aviation policy and commitments to high standards of aviation safety and security,” the statement reads.
The Public Diplomacy Department highlighted the benefits of the agreement, which includes open route rights, unrestricted capacity and frequency of services, a liberal charter system, and opportunities for code-sharing.
“This agreement with Nigeria marks a significant step in liberalizing the international civil aviation sector in Africa. It further expands our strong economic and commercial partnership, promotes people-to-people ties, and creates new opportunities for airlines, travel companies, and customers,” the statement revealed.
The agreement aims to provide more affordable, convenient, and efficient air services, benefiting travelers and shippers and promoting tourism and commerce.
