Transnet to Enhance Straddle Carrier Operations at Durban Container Terminals

Transnet has announced that component parts for 20 straddle carriers used at Durban Container Terminals (DCT) will be received by the end of November.

This response comes as the state-owned logistics utility addresses ongoing equipment inefficiencies at DCT Pier 2.

In a recent port update, Transnet acknowledged the low availability of straddle carriers, stating, “Despite our ongoing efforts, we are still experiencing low availability of straddle carriers, which is impacting our operations and your expectations.”

To address this issue, the utility confirmed that it will assemble and fully commission four straddle carriers each month, with the first batch expected to be operational by the end of January 2025.

When questioned about a statement in Tuesday’s update regarding “necessary extensions,” Transnet clarified that this refers to the review and extension of import storage when the terminal faces challenges such as inclement weather or low equipment availability.

“However, the terminal always advises shipping lines to assign their containers to transporters in a timely manner, indicating the intention to evacuate the containers within the free import storage period,” Transnet explained.

They noted that delays often occur when shipping lines do not assign containers, resulting in increased dwell time.

The utility emphasized that extensions are not granted for unassigned containers or those with road stops, stating, “Extensions are granted only for pre-assigned containers without road stops. Import-free storage dates are communicated to customers daily at 08:00 and 15:00.”

Despite these measures, road freight harbor carriers continue to face daily cargo movement delays and have expressed frustration with Transnet’s truck booking system.

However, Transnet maintains that progress at DCT is steadily underway and has called for private-sector support to address congestion issues effectively.
