Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) is gearing up to support the upcoming citrus export season, as forecasts predict a significant 15% increase in volumes for 2024.
Michelle van Buren Schele, TPT’s general manager of commercial and planning, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to facilitating a successful export season for the citrus fruit industry.
To accommodate the higher volume of traffic, TPT has implemented several measures across its container terminals in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
Dedicated lanes for refrigerated containers at the gates will ensure smooth handling, while an increase in truck appointment slots based on demand and capacity will streamline operations in KZN and the Eastern Cape.
Urging port users to place orange stickers on steri-protocol refrigerated containers for monitoring purposes, TPT emphasizes its commitment to maintaining quality standards throughout the export process.
The recruitment and training of over 200 additional cargo coordinators and port workers further underscore TPT’s readiness to handle the increased workload.
Investments in new equipment, including haulers, trailers, reach stackers, and empty container handlers, aim to enhance landside operations.
Additional capacity at each terminal will improve the turnaround of empty containers, facilitating more efficient stacking and evacuation of import containers via rail to back-of-port facilities.
In preparation for the season, three terminals in Durban have been resourced, with ample plug points and backup power to support uninterrupted operations.
Similar measures have been implemented in Gqeberha to ensure operational efficiency at the Ngqura and Port Elizabeth Container Terminals.
Engaging with depots and cargo owners, TPT is broadening its communication efforts to include the entire supply chain.
By fostering better planning and alignment, TPT seeks to optimize terminal operations and maximize flexibility for depots and cold stores.
Recognizing the potential impact of global events, such as the Red Sea crisis, on shipping rotations, TPT remains vigilant and strategically plans for any disruptions in collaboration with shipping lines.
As citrus fruits play a significant role in South Africa’s exports, TPT’s proactive measures aim to uphold the country’s reputation as a top global supplier.
With enhanced communication and operational readiness, TPT is poised to ensure a smooth and successful citrus export season, benefiting both growers and consumers worldwide.
