SA Cargo has expanded its roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) services to directly access vehicle terminals in Durban, Gqeberha, and East London, aiming to streamline vehicle movement and improve operational efficiency.
“This strategic extension allows us to drive units directly through the terminal without unnecessary stops,” said branch manager Denzil Reddy.
“It enhances our control over the vehicle flow for both imports and exports, ensuring a smoother transition from vessel to yard.”
To support the expanded operations, SA Cargo has appointed dedicated service providers at both ends of the route.
According to Reddy, this integrated approach is designed to maintain high service standards, reduce turnaround times, and boost overall efficiency.
The company is also focusing on strengthening collaboration with service providers to address congestion challenges during peak volume periods—times when multiple vessels arrive and both import and export volumes surge simultaneously.
“These overlapping peak periods create space constraints within terminals and yards, leading to movement delays and operational bottlenecks,” Reddy explained.
“Coordinating vehicle flow becomes more complex, especially when there is limited flexibility in vessel schedules and yard capacity.”
By enhancing its ro-ro routes and logistics partnerships, SA Cargo aims to reduce disruptions and better manage the increased flow of vehicles, even during high-volume periods.
