The first beam of the Trans-Guinean railway connecting the Simandou mine to the Atlantic coast has been installed in Guinea-Conakry.
The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of General Mamadi Doumbouya, President of the Republic of Guinea-Conakry.
Jointly established in 2023 by the Guinean government, the Winning Consortium Simandou Railway (WCSR), Rio Tinto-Simfer and the Trans-guinean company (CTG) will collectively manage the railway and port infrastructure built under the Simandou project.
“This transformative project will redefine Guinea-Conakry’s economic and social landscape for generations to come.” stated Dominic Barton, Chairman of Rio Tinto’s Board of Directors.
The railway project will boast a dual-track system able to accommodate 10,000-ton trains and incorporate 12 stations, 213 bridges, 4 tunnels and over 1,256 culverts and canals.
“The Trans-Guinean railway holds the potential to establish a corridor of prosperity that unites local communities like never before, unlocking new horizons for Guinea-Conakry.” stated General Manager of WCSR Zhang Cheng.
Spanning over 600km from west to east Guinea-Conakry and traversing 12 prefectures, CTG’s railway emerges as a crucial driver for the Simandou iron mine’s development as CTG pledges to establish an uninterrupted national transport network for both passengers and cargo.
