The Port of Maputo is set to begin its ambitious container and coal terminal expansion projects in the first half of this year.
These initiatives are central to the operational upgrades envisioned under the extended concession agreement granted to Sociedade de Desenvolvimento do Porto de Maputo (MPDC), the port’s managing entity.
According to MPDC, the expansion aims to solidify the Port of Maputo’s role as a critical hub for trade and logistics in the region.
A key focus of the project is increasing containerized cargo handling capacity from the current 255,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) to an impressive 530,000 TEU by 2026.
In line with these goals, an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) tender was launched last year for Phase 1 of the container terminal expansion.
This phase, led by a consortium including DP World, will involve comprehensive upgrades to civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure. The initiative also includes extensive facility modernizations to enhance operational efficiency.
The MPDC faces the challenge of balancing commercial growth with social and environmental responsibilities.
The 25-year concession extension requires the implementation of a development strategy that aligns with regulatory compliance and addresses environmental risks.
To achieve this, the port’s expansion strategy embraces a holistic approach to sustainability. This involves incorporating eco-conscious practices into port design, infrastructure planning, business operations, and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
The ultimate goal is to unlock the port’s full potential without compromising ecological and social objectives.
The Port of Maputo’s expansion emphasizes environmentally sustainable operations. Key measures include:
- Biodiversity conservation and habitat protection.
- Advanced water management systems.
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by increasing reliance on renewable energy sources.
- Implementing effective dust control measures to improve air quality.
This strategic approach ensures that the Port of Maputo not only boosts its operational capacity but also becomes a model of smart, eco-conscious port management in the region.
With its enhanced capabilities and sustainability focus, the port is poised to play a pivotal role in regional trade and logistics while contributing to a greener future.
