An MoU between the Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) and Administração dos Portos de Sines e do Algarve, SA is set to enhance cooperation in creating sustainable, green, and digital logistics corridors.
This partnership aims to boost trade, connectivity, and investment between Namibia and Portugal, aligning with the European Commission’s Global Gateway strategy, which seeks to mobilize €300 billion for sustainable infrastructure investments in energy, transport, and digital sectors.
This collaboration positions both countries as potential global leaders in logistics and renewable energy. The Port of Sines, in Portugal, is already recognized as a key European logistics platform due to its advanced infrastructure and strategic geographical location, making it an ideal gateway for trade between Europe and Africa.
Meanwhile, Namibia is rich in renewable energy resources, particularly in green hydrogen production, which is increasingly recognized as a critical element in the global shift toward greener energy.
The MoU also emphasizes the role of Namibia’s ports—Lüderitz and Walvis Bay—in facilitating trade and supporting the global energy transition.
Walvis Bay, Namibia’s primary commercial port, has already become an essential hub for trade between southern Africa and international markets.
Despite its smaller size, Lüderitz plays a crucial role in regional trade development. Both ports will play an integral part in the export of renewable hydrogen, synthetic fuels, and raw materials, which are vital for advancing global sustainability.
In addition to improving trade channels, the partnership will focus on advancing green hydrogen production and supporting global energy efforts.
As Namibia aims to become a leading producer of green hydrogen, the cooperation will help position the country as a key player in the global energy transition. This is crucial as demand for clean energy solutions continues to rise worldwide.
The MoU underscores the strategic importance of sustainable logistics corridors to safely and efficiently transport raw materials and energy, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions and fostering environmentally responsible international trade.
Over the next five years, the two entities will collaborate on port expansion, logistics, and energy synergies, working toward a greener, more sustainable future.
The partnership between Namport and the Port of Sines represents a significant milestone in the development of sustainable logistics corridors and green energy solutions.
Both Namibia and Portugal are set to play a central role in shaping the future of global logistics and energy, working together to enhance trade routes and promote clean energy initiatives.
