Mozambique Railways and NRZ Strengthen Cooperation with Key Operational Agreements

Mozambique Railways (CFM) has taken a significant step in regional rail transport by signing two Operational Understanding Agreements with the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ).

The agreements, signed on March 14, 2025, in Maputo, will allow CFM to operate on Zimbabwean railway lines, enhancing cooperation between the two countries and improving freight transport efficiency.

Covering the 148 km Chicualacuala-Rutenga Southern Corridor and the 84 km Machipanda-Nyazura Central Corridor, the partnership aims to boost freight flow, ensuring a more reliable and cost-effective rail service.

The agreements were signed by senior executives from both companies. Representing CFM were Chairman Eng.

Agostinho Langa Júnior and Executive Director Eng. Cândido Jone, while NRZ was represented by Board Chairman Advocate Michael Madiro and General Manager Ms. Ainah Dube-Kaguru.

Under the agreement, CFM will provide well-maintained locomotives to support uninterrupted operations on NRZ lines.

Additionally, CFM will supply fuel and other essential consumables to facilitate at least two trips within a 24-hour period, as well as deploy crew members to operate in Zimbabwe.

NRZ, in turn, will ensure sufficient traffic volumes and maintain the railway tracks to support smooth operations.

This partnership marks a major milestone in strengthening regional connectivity, fostering economic growth, and enhancing the reliability of rail transport between Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
