Port of Hamburg Fire Extinguished After Explosions Force Highway Closure

Hamburg, Germany — Authorities confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that the massive fire which broke out at the Port of Hamburg on Monday has been fully extinguished, following a large-scale emergency response.

The blaze began on August 25 inside a warehouse on Müggenburger Straße in the Veddel district after a vehicle caught fire. While speculation continues over whether an electric vehicle may have been involved, the exact cause remains under investigation.

The fire spread rapidly through the warehouse, igniting stored gas cylinders and causing a series of violent explosions. Debris was blasted onto the nearby A1 motorway, forcing its temporary closure. A towering smoke column could be seen across the city.

Authorities evacuated around 25 people from the area. Local reports indicate between three and six injuries, at least one of them critical.

Hundreds of firefighters battled the blaze using drones, water cannons, armored police vehicles, and the firefighting vessel Prag. The Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) conducted partial demolitions on the structurally unstable building to reach smouldering hotspots.

By midday Tuesday, the fire was declared fully extinguished, though crews stayed on site to monitor flare-ups and secure the area for investigators.

A smoke warning for nearby districts was lifted after air quality tests showed no immediate health risks. Traffic on the A1 motorway has since resumed, though some local roads remain closed for safety checks.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the vehicle fire that triggered the disaster.
