The Port of Lobito Mining Terminal in Benguela welcomed its first large cargo ship on Friday, loaded with 40,500 tons of sulfur to support mining activities in the Katanga area of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to a press release, the bulk cargo transport ship MV Lindsaylou’s arrival marks the start of port operations by Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR), the concession company for the Lobito Corridor.
The ship was loaded in Qatar and embarked on its journey to Lobito about a month ago.
Unloading operations will utilize necessary measures to ensure compliance with environmental and safety procedures, including the automatic filling of large bags (big bags) through two automatic hoppers designed and manufactured in Angola.
The unloading and storage of cargo will be entirely managed by LAR resources, using local labor and national equipment.
“Once again, we made history! And once again, we proved that the use of State infrastructures by private entities is the best way to create jobs, wealth, and development,” wrote Minister of Transport Ricardo Veigas de Abreu on LinkedIn.
In the minister’s view, this approach accelerates economic diversification and regional integration between Angola and its neighboring countries.
