LAM, Mozambique’s state airline, is gearing up to introduce regular flights to Dubai and Guangzhou, China, by July, announced Theunis Crous, the airline’s general director. The move comes as part of LAM’s strategic plans to broaden its international network.
Crous expressed optimism about the upcoming launches, stating, “We hope to launch flights to Dubai and Guangzhou within the next three months – in June or July.”
He highlighted the airline’s ongoing stabilization efforts, emphasizing a structured approach towards achieving its objectives.
Appointed as LAM’s general director in April last year, Crous, who also serves as the general director of the South African company Fly Modern Ark (FMA), has been tasked with overseeing the airline’s restructuring process.
The leadership transition follows the termination of duties of the former general director, João Carlos Pó Jorge, amid restructuring measures.
This decision was prompted by the discovery of a money embezzlement scheme, resulting in losses of approximately €3 million in ticket sales.
During a ceremony marking the launch of LAM’s new cargo service, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Amilton Alissone underscored the government’s intervention in managing LAM to stabilize the company and prevent further losses.
Alissone highlighted the positive strides made in recent months, including fleet expansion, enhanced domestic and international routes, and a reduction in fares to certain destinations.
While acknowledging the progress, Alissone emphasized the need for continued financial diligence to elevate LAM’s operational efficiency.
Currently, LAM operates regular passenger flights to Mozambique’s provincial capitals and cities like Vilanculos and Nacala. Internationally, it serves destinations such as Johannesburg, Cape Town, Dar-Es-Salaam, Harare, and Lusaka, with plans to expand its reach to Lilongwe and Nairobi.
Additionally, LAM operates flights to Lisbon, its sole intercontinental destination, three times a week since December last year.
