The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced the full certification of Cathay Cargo Terminal and Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (HACTL) through its Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) programme.
This certification was revealed during the World Cargo Symposium in Hong Kong (SAR) this week, where Cathay Cargo Terminal and HACTL became the first cargo handlers from North Asia to achieve IEnvA certification.
With this announcement, the total number of companies certified under IEnvA, including airlines, airports, and ground-handling service providers, has reached 60.
IEnvA certification entails a comprehensive evaluation of a company’s environmental sustainability management systems and its plans for continual performance improvement.
Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Sustainability, expressed pride in working with Cathay Cargo Terminal and HACTL on their sustainability journey.
She emphasized that their commitment to sustainable aviation sets a strong example for the industry and aligns with internationally accepted management standards to address sustainability challenges.
Thomsen highlighted the role of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) in supporting partners like Cathay Cargo Terminal and HACTL in improving environmental impact, urging other airports to follow suit.
Mark Watts, Chief Operating Officer of Cathay Cargo Terminal, described the certification as a significant milestone demonstrating the terminal’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
He emphasized that having IEnvA-certified facilities at Hong Kong International Airport strengthens its position as the world’s leading air cargo hub.
Wilson Kwong, Chief Executive of HACTL, emphasized the organization’s commitment to gaining accreditation under relevant standards to enhance its offerings and support Hong Kong’s status as a global hub.
He expressed support for IATA’s initiative, believing it will help amplify the sustainability message across the industry.
