EU Extends Red Sea Maritime Security Mission Until 2026

The European Union (EU) Council has extended the mandate of its maritime security operation in the Red Sea, EUNAVFOR Aspides, until February 28, 2026, to safeguard freedom of navigation in the region.

In a statement, the Council confirmed that the extension follows a strategic review of the operation and comes with a reference budget of over €17 million for the period.

“To enhance maritime situational awareness, Operation Aspides will not only continue protecting vessels but also collect intelligence on arms trafficking and shadow fleets. This information will be shared with EU member states,” the Council stated.

Additionally, intelligence gathered will be provided to the European Commission, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Interpol, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, and the International Maritime Organization.

Launched in February 2024, EUNAVFOR Aspides is a defensive maritime security operation focused on restoring and protecting freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the Gulf region.

The mission operates along key sea lanes, including the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Strait of Hormuz, and international waters in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf.

The operation was established in response to escalating Houthi attacks on international commercial vessels since October 2023. It is headquartered in Larissa, Greece, and led by Rear Admiral Vasileios Gryparis.
