Durban and Richards Bay Airports Drive Airfreight Growth with Major Expansion Plans
Expansion projects at Durban and Richards Bay airports are underway or in the planning stages to accommodate rising airfreight volumes in the region.
Durban’s airfreight operator, Dube Cargo Terminal at King Shaka International Airport, opened a new public bonded warehouse on April 1.
In May, the Dube TradePort Corporation (DTPC) unveiled the second phase of its Aeropark and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) adjacent to the airport.
At the official launch, Dube TradeZone 2 had already attracted investments totaling R1.8 billion, according to DTPC board chair Mpumelelo Zikalala.
Meanwhile, TradeZone 1 has secured approximately R2.8 billion in investments from companies focused on air logistics, distribution, and light manufacturing.
In Richards Bay, plans are underway to relocate the airport to a new site. While a suitable location has been identified, the project faces challenges including re-zoning, land acquisition from private owners, and navigating regulatory approvals.
These developments underscore a regional commitment to strengthening airfreight infrastructure to support economic growth.
