DRC and Zambia Commit to Strengthened Border Security Cooperation

DRC–Zambia Defence and Security Commission Concludes in Lubumbashi, Pledges Stronger Border Crime Cooperation

The 14th Session of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)–Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security has concluded in Lubumbashi, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to enhanced cooperation in combating crime and strengthening security along their shared border.

Leading the Zambian delegation, Minister of Defence Hon. Ambrose Lwiji Lufuma, MP, underscored the importance of regional peace and stability in facilitating trade and economic growth between the two countries.

He noted that Zambia has commenced beef exports to the DRC and highlighted progress on key regional infrastructure projects, including the Lobito Corridor and the Kolwezi–Solwezi Road.
“Zambia remains committed to sustaining peace and security in the region to ensure the success of these strategic economic initiatives,” Mr Lufuma said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Hon. Jack Jacob Mwiimbu, MP, called for closer collaboration between the two countries’ security agencies to effectively curb cross-border crime.

He emphasized the importance of joint patrols and coordinated operations along the common border.

On the DRC side, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Security, Decentralisation and Traditional Affairs, Lukoo Bihango Jacquemain Shabani, stressed the shared responsibility in addressing banditry, terrorism, and transnational organised crime.

He described the Joint Permanent Commission as a vital platform for resolving security challenges and commended President Félix Tshisekedi and President Hakainde Hichilema for strengthening bilateral relations.

Hon. Shabani also acknowledged the longstanding historical ties between Zambia and the DRC and called for deeper cooperation, particularly in light of the ongoing instability in eastern DRC. He appealed for regional solidarity to address the insurgency affecting the area.

The Zambian delegation included senior officials such as Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Mr Maambo Haamaundu, Acting Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Mr Goodson Sinyenga, Zambia National Service Commander Lt Gen Eng Maliti Solochi, Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General Mr Frederick Chilukutu, and Deputy Inspector General of Police Ms Charity Munganga.
