Congo Airways SA has been granted a 90-day moratorium by the International Civil Aviation Organization (IATA) and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Civil Aviation Authority.
The Ministry of Transport, Communication Routes, and Disenclavement announced this extension on Monday, September 16, 2024, via their official X account.
This moratorium is intended to allow Congo Airways to finalize the return to service of one of its Airbus A320 aircraft, registered as 9S-AKD, while also completing the ongoing process of acquiring additional aircraft. The extension enables the airline to maintain both its air carrier certificate and IATA accreditation.
Since September 11, 2023, Congo Airways has suspended all operations in a bid to enhance service efficiency.
Launched with a fleet of four planes, including two Airbus A320s, the airline has struggled to renew its fleet.
Efforts to secure partnerships have been largely unsuccessful, including a leasing agreement with Kenya Airways for the use of two Embraer planes, which failed to yield desired results.
This 90-day reprieve is expected to provide Congo Airways the opportunity to recover and solidify its position in the aviation market.
