The container vessel CMA CGM Belem, sailing under the Maltese flag, encountered severe weather off the coast of Richards Bay over the weekend, resulting in the loss of 99 containers.
The South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) confirmed the incident, attributing it to a “significant stow collapse” during rough conditions on Friday night.
Initially, the vessel sought refuge in Maputo Bay, but after further assessment, it was redirected to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).
Samsa stated that the affected containers would need to be discharged at a container port facility upon the ship’s arrival. The vessel’s owners are cooperating with authorities in response to the incident.
The CMA CGM Belem, built in 2024, measures 336 meters in length, 51 meters in height, and has a draught of 14.8 meters.
Due to its size, the Port of Ngqura has been identified as the only suitable port for the vessel to seek refuge.
A navigational warning has been issued to ensure the safety of other vessels in the area. Samsa also urged vessels and the public to report any sightings of the lost containers to the relevant authorities.
