Minister of Transport, Ricardo Viegas d’Abreu, inaugurated the Multipurpose Terminal at the Port of Lobito in Benguela on Wednesday.
This terminal is a crucial component of the concession granted by the Angolan Government to Africa Global Logistic (AGL) and serves as a vital gateway for general and containerized cargo passing through the port.
Addressing attendees, Minister d’Abreu emphasized the strategic importance of the Port of Lobito for the development of Benguela province, Angola, and the entire African continent.
He highlighted the port’s pivotal role in facilitating trade and economic growth, emphasizing the need for high operational standards to ensure its efficiency and effectiveness.
Minister d’Abreu revealed that in 2023, the Port of Lobito handled an estimated cargo volume of 1.4 million tons, serviced by over 350 ships.
He projected a significant increase in cargo movement for the current year, expecting it to approach two million tons, along with a rise in the number of ships loading and unloading cargo.
These promising indicators, according to Minister d’Abreu, demonstrate the success of implemented reforms and management models aimed at enhancing national port activity.
He expressed confidence that the professional management guided by international best practices will elevate the Port of Lobito to become one of the most efficient ports in Southern Africa.
The concession contract with Africa Global Logistics was signed just over three months ago, marking a significant milestone in the port’s transformation.
This move underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing port infrastructure and optimizing logistics operations for the benefit of Angola’s economy.
The inauguration of the Multipurpose Terminal signals a new era for the Port of Lobito, poised to play a vital role in driving economic growth and fostering trade partnerships regionally and internationally.
