Angola Awards 20-Year Concession for New Luanda International Airport to CAAP-Led Consortium

Angola Selects Corporacion America Airports to Operate and Develop $3 Billion Luanda International Airport

Angola’s government has awarded the contract to operate and develop Antonio Agostinho Neto International Airport to a consortium led by Corporacion America Airports (CAAP), marking a major step in the country’s aviation and transport infrastructure strategy.

The Luxembourg-headquartered airport operator will manage the $3 billion facility in partnership with Portuguese construction group Mota-Engil, which is CAAP’s consortium partner.

The concession grants the group a 20-year mandate to oversee airport operations and long-term development.

The selection follows a year-long evaluation process in which Angola assessed two joint venture bids as it sought an experienced operator capable of managing the country’s new primary international gateway.

Located approximately 25 miles southeast of Luanda, the new airport is set to fully replace Quatro de Fevereiro Airport, which is situated near the city center. Angola’s national carrier, TAAG Angola Airlines, transferred its international operations to the new airport on October 8.

Antonio Agostinho Neto International Airport began a phased opening in late 2023, initially handling air cargo operations.

TAAG subsequently relocated its domestic flights to the facility in November 2024, consolidating passenger services at the new hub.

The airport’s first phase features a single passenger terminal with an annual capacity of 15 million passengers, alongside a cargo terminal capable of handling up to 130,000 metric tons per year. The facility has two runways, with one currently in operation.

With the concession now awarded, the CAAP-led consortium is expected to focus on scaling operations, enhancing service quality, and supporting Angola’s ambitions to position Luanda as a regional aviation hub.
