Menzies Aviation, the world’s largest aviation services company, has been selected by South African Airways (SAA) to manage all SAA Cargo terminal operations at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, Cape Town International Airport, and Port Elizabeth International Airport.
The appointment, initiated on December 1, 2022, with operations beginning in Cape Town, marks a significant step in SAA’s restructuring process post-business rescue. Professor John Lamola, SAA’s chairperson and CEO, emphasized the importance of this milestone in repositioning SAA Cargo and enhancing its strategic objectives for growth.
Renovations are underway at the terminals in OR Tambo, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth, focusing on sustainability measures such as the integration of electric vehicles and ground service equipment, solar energy installation, energy-efficient lighting, and a comprehensive recycling program.
OR Tambo, with a capacity of 229,000 tonnes per year, and Cape Town, with 92,550 tonnes per year, boast the largest air cargo facilities in South Africa.
Menzies Aviation views this partnership as an opportunity to expand its presence in Africa and strengthen its position as a leading aviation services provider on the continent.
Philipp Joeinig, CEO of Menzies Aviation, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, recognizing SAA’s significance in the cargo industry and highlighting the strategic advantages of operating in South Africa’s premier air freight ports.
