A new initiative, the POTENT-X project—Ports as Energy Transition Hubs—has been launched to position European ports as key sites for renewable energy generation, storage, and distribution.
As part of the EU’s clean energy transition, the project will establish two Living Lab Networks across the North Sea and Baltic regions.
These networks will serve as collaborative platforms for real-world testing, knowledge sharing, and the development of innovative energy solutions.
POTENT-X integrates expertise in renewable energy, digitalization, governance, and socio-economic analysis to create scalable, sustainable energy systems for port operations. The project will focus on two key ports:
- Port of Trelleborg aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, exploring green fuel options and establishing green corridors with partner ports.
- Port of Aalborg will leverage wind energy and power-to-X technologies, developing decision-making tools for integrated energy systems.
The POTENT-X consortium includes seven funded partners: Chalmers University of Technology, Copenhagen Business School, Technical University of Denmark, World Maritime University, University of Seville, Port of Trelleborg, and Port of Aalborg.
