Traxtion Expands African Footprint with Lobito Atlantic Railway Partnership

South African railway company Traxtion has strengthened its presence in Africa by leasing G18U shunting locomotives from Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR).

These locomotives will enhance freight operations at Lobito Port, a key transportation hub connecting Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This partnership aims to improve the efficiency of freight transport along this critical trade corridor.

Previously, Traxtion and LAR agreed to lease U20C locomotives, essential for transporting copper ore and other goods from the DRC.

However, due to infrastructure limitations, these locomotives are replaced at the Angolan border before trains proceed to Lobito Port. To address these challenges, shunting locomotives are being deployed to facilitate smoother freight movement.

The newly leased G18U locomotives will play a vital role in reducing delays and optimizing railway operations within the port.

Under the agreement, Traxtion will maintain the locomotives to ensure long-term performance and reliability. Additionally, the company will train local railway specialists, equipping them with the skills needed to manage and operate the locomotives effectively.

The first G18U locomotive has already arrived in Angola, marking the beginning of this collaboration, while the second unit is in its final preparation phase before shipment.

Traxtion’s expansion now spans nine African countries, reinforcing its growing influence in the continent’s railway sector.

This partnership benefits not only Traxtion and LAR but also the broader regional trade network. By modernizing railway infrastructure and enhancing cross-border connectivity, the upgraded system will support industries such as mining and logistics, promoting economic growth.

Traxtion’s commitment to innovation, skill development, and maintenance solidifies its position as a key player in Africa’s railway industry.

With further investments and strategic alliances, the company is well-positioned to drive the expansion and transformation of rail transport across the continent.
